Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA‑approved method for permanent removal of unwanted hair. It works by eliminating the structures within the hair follicle responsible for growth.

Is electrolysis really permanent?

Yes. Electrolysis is the only method that removes hair and prevents regrowth, making the results fully permanent.

Will electrolysis work for my skin or hair type?

Absolutely. Electrolysis is effective for all:

  • Skin tones

  • Skin types

  • Hair colors

  • Hair textures

  • Body areas

How does electrolysis work?

A fine, sterile probe is inserted into the hair follicle. A small electrical current targets and destroys the dermal papilla, matrix, and “bulge”—the parts of the follicle responsible for producing new hair. Once destroyed, the hair cannot grow back.

Why do people choose electrolysis?

Unwanted hair can affect confidence, comfort, and daily routines. Electrolysis offers a long‑term solution when temporary methods like shaving, waxing, or threading become frustrating or time‑consuming.

Are there different types of electrolysis?

Yes—three modalities are commonly used:

  • Galvanic: Uses chemical reactions

  • Thermolysis: Uses heat energy

  • Blend: Combines both methods

Each is effective for permanent hair removal.

Are there side effects?

Some clients experience temporary redness or mild tenderness immediately after treatment—this varies by individual and typically fades quickly. Modern equipment makes electrolysis more comfortable than ever. Your electrologist will provide personalized aftercare instructions.

How long has electrolysis existed?

Electrolysis was developed in 1875 by Dr. Charles Michel while treating ingrown eyelashes. His discovery became the foundation of modern hair removal, and electrolysis remains the gold standard today.

How many treatments will I need?

Treatment plans vary depending on:

  • Amount of hair

  • Hair thickness

  • Growth cycles

  • Hormonal or genetic factors

Some hairs are permanently removed after a single treatment; others require additional sessions. Once a follicle’s papilla is destroyed, that hair will never return.

Is electrolysis medically recognized?

Yes. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method recognized by the American Medical Association.
